This short course will introduce you to analogue portrait photography and basic darkroom practices. Over six weekly sessions taught by darkroom’s Phil Grey and sometimes White Lies bass player Charles Cave you will be guided through:

  • Making portraits with models outdoors in natural light, and in a studio using strobes

  • Making a contact sheet of your shoots

  • Discussing as a group which pictures are most successful and deciding which to print

  • How to print and fine-tune beautiful silver-gelatin enlargements of your portraits.

You will come away from this course with a beautiful small portfolio of portraiture prints and a grasp of everything needed to continue working in this field, as well the ability to print your work to a good standard in the darkroom.

This course is open to people with all levels of experience, but a good understanding of your camera(s) and lens(es) is highly recommended.

Building a project & PORTFOLIO £700

In this course you will explore a project idea of your choice while also learning and refining your darkroom skills.

Over six weekly evening sessions there will be instruction and support in:

  • Camera functions and control

  • Film processing

  • Printing technique and craft

  • Concept development

  • Critiquing your own and other’s work

  • Making final prints

Starting by considering the work of established photographers and reviewing examples of your own work, this course will guide you through the development of your own personal practice, to produce a portfolio of well-crafted, black and white prints.

Through regular feedback sessions, you will explore how your ideas can be realised and brought to their best conclusion. The programme concludes with each participant making final prints of their best work to exhibit in the darkroom gallery space.

This course is aimed at participants with some knowledge of practical photography (rather than total beginners), and will enable you to produce inventive, high quality work.

The course is be led by Philip Grey, who studied at the Polytechnic of Central London and has since taught photography at a number of London universities. Phil’s history is rooted in analogue photographic practice often including long-form projects.
