ANALOGUE PORTRAITURE WEEKEND £350
Over two full days in and around darkroom you will dive headfirst into portraiture using natural light and black and white film. Learning also how to print your favoured images to best effect.
You will work with professional models to explore framing and composition, light, gesture, expression, mood, styling, and more. On the first day there will be the opportunity to explore the neighbourhood as a group with our models and shoot several rolls of film along the way. Portraiture specialist Charles Cave will encourage you to think carefully about how scene and setting can help describe a feeling you are trying to capture with your models, and take different approaches to the dynamic between you.
Overnight we will process your film and you will return to make contact sheets, which the group will review and help each other decide which negatives to enlarge to beautiful prints. We will discuss how the variables of printing like exposure and contrast have the potential to further enhance our images, and you will leave the course with a small portfolio of portraiture ready to fuel your ongoing journey in this medium.
You should have your own camera (35mm or medium format) and know your way around it. Some prior darkroom experience would be useful, but not essential.
Photowalk & Printing Taster £225/£250
Explore the hidden nooks and crannies of Camden Town, shoot a roll of film and learn how to make some prints from the negatives. Meet other like-minded photographers and share ideas and insights. What could be better over a Summer weekend?
Under the expert guidance of renowned street and music photographer Stuart Nicholls, you will be guided through Camden Market, along the Regent’s Canal, up to Primrose Hill and discover hidden photographic treasure along the way. Overnight, the roll of film you have shot will be processed and on Sunday morning when you arrive at darkroom there will be a contact sheet waiting for you to choose which images you want to print. You will be shown how black and white photographic prints are created and then have the opportunity of making a few of your own.
This is ideal for both beginners and experienced photographers looking for a novel picture-taking adventure. No previous darkroom experience required.
Film, paper and all chemistry is included in the fee.
Don’t have a camera? No problem, click the ‘camera supplied’ option when booking and we will give you a disposable camera to work with.
Pinhole Photography and Print WORKSHOP £100
This new four-hour workshop enables you to work with a pinhole camera to capture unique images and learn how to develop them in our darkroom.
Starting with an introduction to the principles underpinning this lens-less method of taking photographs, you will then be shown how to make your pinhole camera. After a quick demonstration of the darkroom print developing process, you will have the opportunity to make a few ‘instant’ pinhole photographs.
This fun workshop is also ideal for kids and families. Contact us for group bookings
