Pinhole Photography and Print WORKSHOP £190

A camera with no lens, no settings and no viewfinder that you can make yourself out of an empty can of drink? Come along and find out how! Plus, you will also get the chance to experiment with a couple of other pinhole cameras to see how different designs affect the image and the calculations.

Learn how to expose photographic paper in your camera, develop your paper negatives in the darkroom, and select your favourite image to turn into a positive print. You will also get the chance to try Direct Positive paper and compare the unique results it produces, making a varied set of images along the way.

This is a really fun experimental day: exposures will be guessed; pictures will fail; surprises will happen. We will embrace mistakes, learn why things go wrong, and enjoy the slow process. No prior experience needed - just curiosity and a willingness to experiment.

Children and families welcome. Each child must be 11 or older and be accompanied by a paying adult.

ANALOGUE PORTRAITURE WEEKEND £350

Over two full days in and around darkroom you will dive headfirst into portraiture using natural light and black and white film. Learning also how to print your favoured images to best effect.

You will work with professional models to explore framing and composition, light, gesture, expression, mood, styling, and more. On the first day there will be the opportunity to explore the neighbourhood as a group with our models and shoot several rolls of film along the way. Portraiture specialist Charles Cave will encourage you to think carefully about how scene and setting can help describe a feeling you are trying to capture with your models, and take different approaches to the dynamic between you.

Overnight we will process your film and you will return to make contact sheets, which the group will review and help each other decide which negatives to enlarge to beautiful prints. We will discuss how the variables of printing like exposure and contrast have the potential to further enhance our images, and you will leave the course with a small portfolio of portraiture ready to fuel your ongoing journey in this medium.

You should have your own camera (35mm or medium format) and know your way around it. Some prior darkroom experience would be useful, but not essential.
