Darkroom Founder Exhibits At Lucy Bell Gallery

We are excited to announce that Philip Grey, one of Darkroom’s founders, currently has work on show at the Lucy Bell Gallery in St Leonards-on-Sea.

His photograph of Debbie Harry is part of Live!, an exhibition mounted in collaboration with Rockarchive which is running until September 18th and showcases some of the greatest ever live music photographs. Included in this exciting mix, are iconic shots of leading artists performing at some of music’s greatest venues, both past and present; Jimi Hendrix on stage at the Marquee Club; the Sex Pistols tearing down the 100 Club; Oasis storming it at Slane Castle and Jimmy Page rocking it with Led Zeppelin at Earls Court.

Phil’s image, taken at an early Blondie gig at The Roundhouse (just round the corner from darkroom), is rubbing shoulders with a number of illustrious music photographers of the past fifty years. Including Jill Furmanovsky, Kevin Cummins, David Corio, Ray Stevenson, Ian Dickson and Michael Putland.

Due to COVID restrictions it wasn’t possible to have a rock and roll style private view, but Phil was greeted with a beer by gallery owner Lucy on the opening day. Her husband, the master printer Robin Bell was also on hand to share darkroom anecdotes and lend encouragement to what we are doing here at darkroom. He even offered to come and visit us and give a demonstration of his approach to printing. Watch this space!

If you’re missing the energy and excitement that live music brings, these photographs will go someway towards making up for what we have lost over the past year.
