Our second Artists in Residence exhibition on October 10th was another great success. A well-orchestrated installation in the morning, meant we ready to welcome the first visitors arriving for the opening at 1.00pm. There was a steady stream of people throughout the afternoon and by the end of the day darkroom was packed with an appreciative crowd!
Jivan West decided on a stratified hang, echoing the slate in the quarry he photographed for his project. His work combines wide landscapes, showing the gradual reclamation of the site by nature, with textural close-ups of the rock and its colonisation by lichen.
Francisco Macfarlane had spent two weeks on a park bench surreptitiously recording snippets of conversations from passing strangers. These formed the basis for a series of abstract images created by laser light oscillated by the vibrations generated by a speaker playing the voices.
Nelle Laurent recently discovered a cache of her great-great-grandmother’s negatives and a stereo camera used by her over a hundred years ago. Nelle spent the residency coating her own negatives to produce stereoscopic slides, which were displayed alongside a set of exquisite handmade books containing prints made from her relative’s films.
The application process for our next Artist In Residence programme will start in Spring 2027. Contact us for further details here.
