This Is Not A Lecture!

We are delighted to announce that photographer and academic John Spinks is coming to darkroom to lead a series of Phototalks.

The initial four informal talks offers an accessible introduction to some of the key strands of photographic practice: The Portrait, The Landscape, The Document, and The Photobook.

Each session takes the form of a small, round-table conversation, using a selection of carefully chosen photobooks to explore how these approaches have developed over time. We’ll look at the work of a number of influential photographers, considering how their images operate, what they respond to, and how they sit within a broader photographic history.

Designed for a small group of participants, the sessions are open, friendly, and conversational. Questions, comments, and discussion are encouraged throughout.

Aimed at those with an interest in photography—whether new to the subject or looking to deepen their understanding—these talks offer a way into the medium that is both thoughtful and approachable, without assuming prior knowledge.

These sessions are free and open to all. Early booking is strongly advised due to small group sizes.
